Car Explosion

...it was complex and laborious work includes both sophisticated technology and a lot of time with the sleepless nights and 7 day work weeks. The task was to create the full 3D explosion of the jeep. All stages including drama and story of the explosion, prepering 3D models, simulating and calculating of the fluids ... and at last — compose all together -- all the work fell on me.





I supposed the idea was to shoot the real explosion... but than something changed and they decided to make whole computer graphic explosion.

I collected plenty of reference and tutorial material and started ...

I resimulated explosion several times until achieved the desired result of the fire behaviour. For the record — I observe all the interaction with the enviroment objects. Finally i got the whole pure 100% detailed 3D explosion. You could circled it with the camera, to render from any point you like, to fly throug it and to render with any shader.

The next stage was to render out the simulated material into the passes for next using them in compose . After a little research I outlined the necessary passes and rended them.



I prepared the 3D car model and drawing enviroment. I projected the mattepainting on 3D objects. Also I prepared debris, obstacles, smoke and dust.

The compositing the final stage wasn't any easier than previous
stages. It was a lot of layers of explosion, fire, smoke, debris, 3D enviroment, spakles, glasses fragments and additional footage materials. All of them in HD resolution.

Eventually i managed all the stages ... and i thought it was my small victory.
